New Home - Vietnamese Museum


After 12 years of 'floating' between the offices of Members of Parliament in Parliament House, Canberra, the boat has now made its way home to Melbourne. It will soon go on display at the Vietnamese Museum in Sunshine, where it will remain for the next five years.

A heartfelt thank you to Andrew Wilkie MP, who first welcomed the boat into his office in 2014, and to Senator Anne Urquhart, who most recently gave the boat a space in her office. I am also grateful to everyone who, over the past 12 years, made room for the boat and helped continue the conversation.

Thank you for allowing this humble boat to be a reminder of the journeys of refugees and migrants, and of the gratitude many carry for finding refuge and building new lives in this wonderful country.

The Vietnamese Museum will officially open on Sat, 17th of October. We invite you to come and celebrate this new chapter in the story of the Vietnamese diaspora in Australia — and to see the boat, not simply as an object from the past, but as a symbol of courage, hope, gratitude and new beginnings.
